No
other German city has a musical history, which can quite
match Leipzig’s. It was here that Johann
Sebastian Bach spent 27 years in charge of St Thomas’s
Boys Choir, Robert Schumann composed his Spring Symphony,
Clara Wieck was acclaimed as a highly successful pianist,
Richard Wagner was born, Felix Mendelssohn spent several
years heading the Gewandhaus Orchestra, Albert Lortzing
wrote his opera Tsar and Carpenter – in fact the
list of examples goes on and on.
